Accountants and Boy Scouts Work Together to Teach Children About Money

NYSSCPA Nassau Chapter’s Financial Literacy Committee
and Seaford Boy Scouts educated kids on the benefits of being financially responsible

SEAFORD, NY – January 23, 2015 – Local children participated in a hands-on, educational event hosted by the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA), Nassau Chapter, Financial Literacy Committee and Seaford Boy Scout Packs 581 and 239, and Troop 581. Kids moved from table to table taking part in activities encouraging monetary awareness.

“It is extremely important to educate children about money management as early as possible,” said Karen Tenenbaum, chair of the Committee of NYSSCPA, Nassau. “Children should learn about saving and the differences between wants and needs.”

The mission of the Financial Literacy Committee is to reach out to children in order to guide them on their journey toward financial literacy and fiscal responsibility. The Committee exposes kids to engaging and instructional material which help them understand money and finances at an age-appropriate level.

Recent national report shows teenagers scoring poorly in financial literacy test

Levittown, NY – March 27, 2014 – The Nassau County Chapter of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) will conduct a Family Financial Literacy Fair to educate children in kindergarten through fifth grades on the importance of saving money. Through fun activities, experienced tax professionals will offer great ways for kids to learn the skills to prevent financial burdens from occurring in the future. The fair will be held at the YES Community Counseling Center in Levittown on Saturday, May 3, 2014 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. To RSVP to attend the fair, please email your name, address, email address, phone number, number of child attendees, and number of adult attendees to financialliteracyfair@yahoo.com.
The trend across the country shows that young adults need help in the financial area. During 2012 and 2013, nearly two-thirds of students aged 15 to 18 scored below 70 percent in the National Financial Educators Council financial literacy test, administered to 1,309 people. “It is extremely important to educate children in money management as early as possible,” said Karen Tenenbaum, the fair’s lead organizer, member of NYSSCPA Nassau, and partner at Tenenbaum Law, P.C.  “We instill solid skills in children at a young age so that when they mature, they are in the ideal position to pay their bills. At the fair, kids will learn how to spend responsibly, give appropriately, and budget regularly.”

Families will participate in money-related activities and observe live entertainment. The animated character, Walter the Vault, will make an appearance and teach children how to save and invest, with the main goal being to educate parents/guardians and children to ensure that future generations make the right financial decisions. The fair is sponsored by Ameriprise Financial Inc., Sanders Thaler Viola & Katz LLP, Marks Paneth LLP, Charles Schwab, Robert Kothe, and Money Masters, Inc.
